Why I Publish Books and eBooks Using Amazon's Createspace Print On Demand

Publishing and Self Publishing are jobs I enjoy but my real love is writing. Because my company, Positive Imaging, LLC, is a one person publishing business it's important that every step in the publishing process of each book be as simple, effective, and efficient as possible so I still have time to write. I like to control the editing, layout, formatting, and even the cover creation but once I'm ready to upload the files I want my printer to take care of everything else.

Since 2008 Createspace, an Amazon company, has been my printer. They take my files and quickly check them out and then I order a quality proof to make certain it's everything I expect. Usually I purchase at least two proofs and sometimes three. Not because Createspace has made mistakes but because I have and once I correct them I want to make certain it looks good. There's nothing like a completed proof to bring mistakes to light.

Once I approve my proofs Createspace takes all the steps necessary to sell it worldwide. They create an eStore just for my new book. I can use that as my fulfillment page from my web site or as an email link on email sales pages. They place it on Amazon where it is available worldwide, and they also make it available to book retailers around the world. There is nothing else for me to do except as much marketing as possible to let the world know about my book.

I don't maintain a stock of my books except for a few for book signings or for friends and family. No storing of an inventory, no processing book orders, no packaging books and no shipping around the world. When anyone orders a book Createspace prints it within 24 hours and then ships directly to the customer. For this service there are two charges. The first is the price or cost of printing the book and the second is the commission charged for handling and selling the book. The commission varies depending on where the book is sold. If it sells in my Createspace eStore the commission is only 20%. If it is sold on Amazon the commission is 40%, and if sold in a bookstore they charge a 60% commission of which the book store keeps 40%.

With that level of quality service being available to me, why would I want to handle any of those things myself? I don't have the time or the inclination. Some argue that I could make more money if I printed a quantity of books, stored them, and sold them directly to the customer. That is true because I would get to keep more of the money but would I really be making more? What about all the extra work I have to do including maintaining an inventory and reporting it to the IRS, communicating directly with the customers, packaging their orders, shipping out the orders and then handling any delivery issues. This is all work that doesn't sound very appealing and i should get paid for my work. So, will I really make more money? Plus, because of all the extra work I have much less time to write. I could hire someone to handle the fulfillment but then I would be paying any extra money to someone else anyway. It's simpler to pay Createspace to handle it all.

Createspace also helps you to create Kindle versions of all your paperback books or paperback versions of all your Kindle books. This way your book is available to readers no matter whether they like paper or ebooks. If you are confused about any aspect of the process they have excellent tutorials to help you along and all of it is free.

Another added benefit is excellent customer service. When dealing with any company, problems will arise. The important thing is how they deal with them. Createspace handles them promptly with real concern for their customers. Here are a couple of examples where they responded immediately to resolve issues. The first was with a book I published for a customer and one order of forty books arrived with a photo missing from one of the pages. No one noticed until months later when a customer pointed it out to the writer. She informed me and I contacted Createspace who promptly sent me another forty copies, no questions asked. Recently I ordered six copies of a children's book and the delivery driver left it in an exposed place and it rained soaking the box. Several of the books were wet and the covers and some pages had stains. One call to Createspace and they immediately sent out six more copies. This is a company that values customers so I stick with them.

I write because I love it and I publish to make a profit. Using Createspace I get to do both because they keep my publishing issues to a minimum allowing me to write almost every day. If you want to publish or self publish your writing without the many stresses and complications, Createspace is the printer to use to get your book out.
