What Is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a lightweight, interpreted, object oriented language with first class functions, most known as the scripting language for web pages, but also used in non browser environments such as node.js or Apache Couch DB. It was originally implemented as part of web browsers so that the client side scripts could interact with the user control the browser and communicate synchronically.

JavaScript is a prototype based scripting language that is dynamic, weakly typed and has first class functions. Its syntax was influenced by the language C, copies many names and naming conventions from Java but the two languages are otherwise unrelated and have very few similarities. The key design principles within JavaScript are taken from the self and scheme programming languages. It is a multi paradigm language, supporting subject-oriented, imperative and functional programming styles.

The JavaScript Standard is the ECMAScript. As of 2012, all modern browsers fully supported ECMAScript. There are several things that fall under the ECMAScript scope which of course are defined by ECMAScript and they include:

The language Syntax (parsing rules, keywords, control flow, object letter initialization), error handling mechanisms, that is ability to create user defined error types, the global object, or in a browser environment, this global object is the window object. A couple of functions are attached to this category and include parsefloat, parseInt, decode URI among others. Similarly ECMAScript also defines a prototype based inheritance mechanism, built in objects and functions and the strict mode.

JavaScript have some common functions in the world of web pages and they are considered anytime when designing a web page. First of all, is the common JavaScript function of displaying a visitors IP address back to them, to let them know that you are cognizant of their presence. This is used often on discussion boards and forums where financial data or transactions occur. Despite the presence of the code, there is no actual recording of the IP address of the visitor by this script.

In addition to that another common JavaScript snippet include those that lets you display the date and also a calendar and can be altered using style sheets. The data can also be displayed and can be altered to how the formatting of the date takes place. If you choose to add the time to your site using JavaScript, check out Pinglers clock tool for an easy way to show the time on your site either in 24 hrs.

With all the above, let's look at some of the advantages of JavaScript. JavaScript is very easy to implement, all you need to do is put your code in the HTML document and tell the browser that it is JavaScript. Another major advantage is that JavaScript works on web users' computers even when they are offline.

Similarly it will assist you to create highly responsive interfaces that improve the user experience and provide dynamic function ability without having to wait for the server to react and show another page. JavaScript can load content into the document if and when the use needs it without reloading the entire page, commonly referred to as Ajax.
