Wedding Photography Checklist For All Brides

Missing out on a great photo opportunity is one of the biggest flops of a wedding. Such a momentous occasion must have key events captured so they can be cherished for years. Wedding photographers will attempt to shoot moments that stand out as best they can but it's up to the bride and her groom to list what they feel is important enough to be photographed.

Having a checklist will prevent missed opportunities that can't be regained once the nuptials are over. Unimportant shots can be prevented by sitting down with your spouse and discussing key moments in the day or objects such as wedding invitations and the bridal bouquet. Once a list has been made, hand it to the photographer.

What constitutes key moments differs from person to person but here are a few that most tend to hold dear.

Before invitations are sent, couples can have them photographed perhaps against a white backdrop or a floral environment.

Bouquet, dress/tux and jewelry

These are the four items that transform a woman into a princess and a groom into a dashing prince on their special day. Wedding dress photography is quite simple but the groom's pictures can be made less difficult to shoot by focusing on his tux, tie and shoes. Using photo editing software, the two can be combined into one picture.

Maid of honor, bridesmaids and groomsmen

This is the team that helps couples enjoy the limelight by assisting them with various needs on the wedding day. You can have photographers take photos of them helping out with the decorations and enjoying some respite with you and your spouse prior to the wedding. Pictures of them getting ready can also be shot.

Bridal makeup and hair/groom getting ready

These make for interesting shots despite being done many times because there are so many angles to focus on. A head shot taken from the top, a picture of makeup applied on the eyes, the hairstylist's hands teasing tresses etc are a few interesting focal points.

Like the bride, the groom can be photographed putting a corsage into a buttonhole, adjusting his cuffs and tying his tie.

The rings

The wedding rings represent the 'official' bond between newlyweds and must be considered a priority subject. They can be laid on tables with a flower-filled vase as the backdrop, done the traditional way and worn by the couple etc. The choice is up to you.

Bride & mother/father and groom & mother/father

Separate shots of the newlyweds and their parents are traditional. They can also be swapped with their in-laws and the couple and both sides of the family. Separate photos of siblings and a large family portrait can also be shot.

Venues like the church and the reception area make for picturesque standalone photos or backdrops. The interior can also be focused on and special attention paid to the decorations and the pews.

Wedding march

The wedding march with the bride and her entourage as well as the groom and his groomsmen standing near the altar waiting for the bride make for memorable shots. The priest and a panoramic view of the attendees are additions.

The after party

This period is more casual as tradition is replaced by sheer fun. Still, it's possible to get elegant shots if the photographer has an eye for interesting takes. The dance floor, seating area, band or DJ, children, decorations, wedding cake, families and most of all, the couple, can be photographed.
