Marketing Strategy for Getting the Top Agent and Publisher






     It has been eight years since i decided to write a book. My dream was to gather all the knowledge and learning experiences to create a value for my readers and provide strategies that can easily be applied.

I started to write on the 1st of February 2012, and I imagined that i would complete the book within few months. Little did I know that it would take me 365 days to complete it! Indeed, on the 1st of February 2013, I achieved my goal, and you can imagine the wonderful feeling that comes with completing something you have planned for eight years. I said, "This is the greatest thing I've ever done."

However, a few weeks later I encountered a new challenge. I have learned to believe that a man should ask for high goals and high values; so, I opted for the traditional publishing in the USA. I wrote the book under the belief that it is a small part of the effort. I thought that I had completed the most difficult part-writing the book-and the rest of the things will go smoothly. But I was wrong! There emerged some new information which I was not aware of as I stepped into a completely new area.

I've learned that to publish a book in the USA, you must have an agent called a literary agent, and all authors (except me until recently) should know how it works.

The strategy is as follows: Once you've written a book, you have to send a query letter to literary agent. The literary agent or his assistant receives your email and you are on hold for 4-8 weeks. If you do not get a response within 8 weeks, chances are that you will not get their response at all. So, that means that you should submit another query letter to a new literary agent, and again you go through the whole process; where you wait, wait and wait until God knows when.

The thing is that there is a reason why literary agents behave in that manner. The best in the industry receive up to 50 such queries each day and of course the problem is that in that forest of emails, it is hard to get noticed.

Another argument is that as an author, you must have a strong platform such as Facebook fun page, twitter followers, blogs, and so on which will make it easy for the public to know your work. In other words, even if you have a fantastic literary peace of work in your hands without a platform, chances of your query being attended to are reduced to a minimum.

My situation: I am an author from Croatia who wants to publish a book in the USA.

Their (L.A.) assumption number one is: 'Where is this Croatia? Or even worse, WTF is Croatia?' And the assumption No. 2: 'He certainly does not have any sales platform, and even if there is, there is no sales platform in the USA.'

This factual problem situation requires a completely new approach to solving this (mine) problem. My plan is to make it hard for my query to be ignored among the 50 queries that come in a day. The strategy that I have taken is a combined use of video clip on YouTube, a new web site just for the purpose of search agents, the use of Google AdWords with the names of agents plus a little aggressive approach on Twitter.

The philosophy behind these steps is: If you go to them, you are weak but if they come to you, you are strong.

In other words, instead of sending email after email and waiting for weeks and months without feedback, I decided that spending few dollars on Google AdWords can draw to myself a literary agent. If in the next 10 days nothing significant happens, I will turn to the well-known assumption of NLP:

If you are not getting the results you want, rethink very carefully what you are doing. You are not failing; you are merely achieving feedback. The feedback may not accord with your thinking but consider it and think about changing your approach.
