Italian Food And Wine: Gavi di Gavi DOCG White Wine






     Italian tradition offers foods and drinks known and appreciated all over the world. Just think of products such as Mozzarella di Bufala, balsamic vinegar of Modena, Grana Padano cheese, Parma ham, speck of Alto Adige, lemons of Sorrento, and varieties of oil, grain, fruit and liqueurs. Abundance and quality, which also affect the world of wine, of which Italy is one of the most important producers in the world. Every region counts at least 3 or 4 fine red and white wines: Greek di Tufo, Franciacorta, Primitivo di Manduria, Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and many others. In Piedmont, one of the regions with the strongest wine tradition as well as Tuscany and Veneto, there are a dozen DOCG wines (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) and about seventy DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin).

Among these, a prominent place is hold by Gavi di Gavi, a white wine of great character produced in the province of Alessandria. Gavi is the name of the town where it originated this wine, while the name of the white grape is Cortese (from which Cortese di Gavi). In addition to the small town of Gavi, DOCG white wine is produced in the municipalities of Bosio, Capriata d'Orba, Carrosio, Francavilla Bisio, Novi Ligure, Parodi Ligure, Pasturana, San Cristoforo, Serravalle Scrivia, Tassarolo. The hills with a tuff and limestone soil represent an ideal environment for the growth of Gavi di Gavi. The clusters are voluminous, conical in shape, with skin of medium consistency of yellow, juicy flesh simple characteristic, pleasant. Gavi di Gavi is produced from 100% Cortese grape vines, which means that the only grape used is exactly Cortese grape.

The Gavi di Gavi DOCG is a great wine to match with boiled meat, trout meuniere and baked sea bream, but also with goat and blue cheeses, including the famous Tomino of Piedmont. A very appreciated risotto, born from the use of this wine as a condiment, is risotto di Gavi. Color, flavor and aroma of Gavi di Gavi vary in function of aging in barrels and ripening in bottle. Young and lively wines are straw yellow and have a dry and pleasant flavor and a delicate aroma. Wines of over 3 years assume an intense yellow color and a more structured flavor. Depending on the pairing and type quiet, lively or sparkling, the Gavi di Gavi will be served between 8 C and 12 C.
