Differences Between Joomla & Drupal

Two of the most popular content management systems (CMS) are Joomla & Drupal. Similar to operating systems (like Mac and Windows); there are staunch believers in which one is better. In reality both are great tools and which on is better depends on what you are trying to accomplish. They are both Open Source CMSs, which means you can modify their codes to your wish and they are free foe anyone. So it is possible to get both and play around with them to see which one suits your needs better. Another way to look at these two is that Drupal is a language or framework while Joomla is more of a program. There are several other differences between these two and they include:

They have different interface of the administrator. Joomla has an all in one place interface for controlling content, design, modules and so forth. It is just like you would expect a control panel to look like. For example, the article manager and images are in the image manager. On the other hand, Drupal is controlled by a control bar which appears at the top of screen when the administrator is logged in. One advantage of having this kind of control is that all the control panels adapt to the page you are on.

Another major difference is the flexibility between the two. You will find out that Drupal is more flexible than Joomla. However the downside is that Drupal can be more complicated which can consume a lot of time for new users to get acquainted with it.

Likewise, you will find a difference in the size of site managed by these two. Joomla is for medium sized sites that do not require a lot of complexity while Drupal is for large websites that require a lot of complex features.

To add onto that, Joomla would be a very good pick if you are looking for a solution that will work out of the box. With Drupal you may need to install modules for certain features. A very good example of this is in Drupal in the default installation, there is no html editor. So in order to format your text, you must know html or use html editor from another program. However, you can install a module that will bring an html editor into Drupal. In contrast Joomla already have a preinstalled html editor with it.

Another major difference is that in Drupal all its content is within blocks. Blocks are the visible boxes in various areas of a Drupal website. Whether and where these boxes appear depends on both the theme and administration block settings. In Joomla you create content within categories, but the content is tied to the location on specific pages.

With those differences in place, we can conclude that both Drupal and Joomla are great CMSs. One theme that is running through all the differences is that Drupal has more flexibility that may be needed for large and more complex sites. This still does not leave Joomla out of the league of complex sites but it's worth saving the hustle and giving the task to Drupal.
